Speed Cleaning Tips

Friday, August 12, 2016

Some of us have those days when we choose to ignore the fact that our home is a complete mess. Rather than pick up the clothes on the bed and toss them in the laundry basket, we choose to shove the clothes to one corner and sit on the isolated side of the bed. Everything is well and good, after all you are not expecting a visitor.

Till you get a text from someone whose opinion you care about saying they’ll be at your house in an hour tops. Then it's time to panic. What do you do? Where do you start from? The house is topsy turvy and it's too late to call a cleaning service. You haven’t even showered.

In those 50-something minutes before the guest you are trying to impress shows up, you end up running around the house doing everything and nothing. And we don't want that for you. So here’s how to make the best use of your time when your house is a mess and you have a visitor coming over:

Step 1 prioritize

Map out in your head the parts of your house the visitor would definitely walk into like the living room, the bathroom and probably the kitchen. There’s no need to start sweeping the balcony or dusting the books on the shelf. There simply isn’t enough time.

Step 2: Speed Clean

The first part of speed cleaning is removing all the misplaced items on the floor of the living room like the pair of socks, the bag of Cheetos and the unfinished bottle of beer. You may also want to check the sides of the sofa – the unlikeliest things tend to get stuck there.

Check out the bathroom, ensure there’s no toothpaste stuck on the hand basin and there’s enough toilet paper. Also ensure the toilet is flushed.

If you have a lot of dishes in the sink, you are not going to be able to wash them all before your guest gets home. Arrange them in a stack so they don’t look too dirty.

Step 3: Double check

Just to be sure there isn’t anything you missed, go out of your apartment and walk back in so you have an guest’s view of the room. If you notice anything off, fix it fast.

Step 4: Receive your guest

Seeing as you were unable to clean the entire house, you are going to have to play defense with your friend. “oh a tour? I’d love to but let’s make that next week so I can pull all the stops for you” “You need a glass of water, you don’t need to get up, I’ll get it for you”
